Egged on by President Clinton, representatives of movie theater owners across the country announced today that they would begin requiring teen-agers to present photo identification cards when they showed up without an adult to see an R-rated film.

The announcement was the latest effort by politicians and officials of the entertainment industry to respond to public concern that pervasive violence in movies and on television was partly responsible for the shootings this spring in high schools in Littleton, Colo., and Conyers, Ga.
